What are ICT and How do I learn new ICT?

It is evident that technology in the 21st century is ever changing, developing and progressing in order to meet the technological requirements and expectations of our world. I personally believe that Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) is a digital tool in which data can be accessed, manipulated and saved for future use in order to achieve a desired result. Whilst gathering and using this data, one can communicate and collaborate ideas and results with others to further knowledge and achieve an improved outcome.

Personally, I learn new ICT by just interacting with and observing by own environment and its technological happenings. New, unfamiliar ICT can be found in the classroom, both at university and in the primary school classrooms, at home, and even whilst accessing social networking sites. I have found that in the technological rich culture that is the 21st century, ICT can not only be accessed and used easily, it can also be learnt fairly quickly, due to the huge amounts of support available to most, simply by completing a web search or consulting an expert. In summary, I learn new ICT by simply being exposed to it, and having to utilise it, constantly in my day to day life.

  1. Hi Melissa,

Its true that ICTs are a constantly changing and evolving tool which continue to progress to meet the requirements and expectations of our technological world. This is why it is now such an important part of the Australian Syllabus and there is a stress to implement it more and more in the classroom. Students are now required to use technology on a daily basis to develop the skills they can utilise in there careers in a globally technologized world.

I agree with your thoughts on how you learn new ICTs. I personally learn new ICTs by observation and immersing myself in an ICT rich environment. During primary school I remember we learnt typing, how to use internet explorer and the basics of Microsoft word however in this new technologically modernised society I feel like there is much more opportunity to immerse students in ICTs whether it’s utilising iPad’s to using social media. The use of this blog is a perfect example of how easy it can be to use ICTs in everyday life and implement them in the classroom.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

  2. Hi Laura, thank you for engaging with my blog. You have some great ideas on how to use ICT effectively in the classroom and at home.
I agree, the extent to which technology was accessed and utilised within primary schools years ago, in my personal experience, was the use of a television for educational videos and overhead projectors to display important information. It’s amazing how rapidly technology has advanced within the classroom today, with Interactive Whiteboards and IPads serving as extremely common tools for teachers today.
